In addition to a BHL, M.A., Rabbi from Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, Rabbi Goor has a Ph.D. in Human Behavior and Leadership Development from the U.S. International University in San Diego and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Rabbi Goor has been with the Metropolitan Synagogue since 1983.  Prior to that, his rabbinic experience includes positions at the Greenwich Reform Synagogue in Connecticut, the UJA Federation, American Friends of the World Jewish Bible Centre of Jerusalem,Temple Emanu-El in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Temple Solel (now merged with Congregation Beth Israel) in San Diego, California, and the Putnam County Temple in Brewster, New York.  He also served as a United States Air Force Chaplain to Jewish Personnel in France, Spain and Morroco.

Complementing his rabbinic career, Rabbi Goor has extensive academic experience and has been heavily involved with both national and local Jewish community activities and has participated in a number of youth programs.  He has also published a number of articles on religion and religious education.

Rabbi Goor has won numerous awards, including the Israel Bonds Award in Greenwich in 1983, the Jewish Federation of Greater Ft. Lauderdale Campaign Leader Award in 1977, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, San Diego, Brotherhood Award 1971-1972, A.D.L. Human Relations Awards: San Diego, 1964 and 1968 and Southern California, 1967, and the United Jewish Federation of San Diego, Special Campaign Leadership Award in 1962.

The Metropolitan Synagogue sorrowfully announces the passing of Rabbi Joel Goor.  Rabbit Goor was the "heart and soul" of our synagogue for over 25 years.  He will be greatly missed. 

Services for Rabbi Goor will be held on Monday, December 26th at 11:00 am at the synagogue.  The shiva will be later that afternoon, at 5:30 pm, also at the synagogue.  Please join us as we remember Rabbi Goor and bid him a final farewell.
